Ready to Book Your First Colonic?
One of the first things I hear from new clients is, "I'm not sure what to expect." It's completely natural to feel a little nervous, especially if you've never had a colonic before.
You might be wondering:
Will it be embarrassing?
Will it hurt?
What actually happens during the treatment?
How do I prepare?
Will I feel different afterwards?
The good news is that most people leave their first appointment saying exactly the same thing:
At Naturally Healthy Colonics, my aim is to make you feel comfortable, informed and supported from the moment you arrive. This guide explains everything you need to know, so you can come to your appointment feeling confident and relaxed.
I regularly welcome first-time clients from across Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, including Ely, Littleport, Downham Market, King's Lynn, Bury St Edmunds, Cambridge and Norwich and surrounding areas. Wherever you're travelling from, my aim is to provide a calm, welcoming and professional experience from the moment you arrive.
What Is Colonic Hydrotherapy?
Colonic hydrotherapy is a gentle treatment that uses warm, filtered water to cleanse the large intestine, also known as the colon.
During the treatment, water is introduced slowly into the colon through a small, sterile, single-use tube called a speculum. At the same time, waste is gently carried away through a closed system, making the treatment clean, hygienic and as discreet as possible.
Many people imagine the process will be uncomfortable or messy, but they're often surprised by how calm and professional the experience feels.
Many people choose colonic hydrotherapy as part of a wider commitment to their digestive health, alongside a nutritious diet, good hydration, regular movement and healthy lifestyle habits.
Why Do People Choose Colonic Hydrotherapy?
Everyone's reason for having a colonic is different. Some people come because they're struggling with digestive symptoms, while others simply want to support their overall wellbeing.
People commonly choose colonic hydrotherapy to help support:
Constipation
Bloating and abdominal discomfort
Sluggish bowels
A feeling of incomplete bowel emptying
Healthy bowel function
General digestive and gut health
After treatment, many people leave feeling lighter, more comfortable and motivated to make positive lifestyle changes.
During your consultation, I'll ask about your bowel habits, medical history, diet and lifestyle. This helps me understand your individual needs, ensure colonic hydrotherapy is suitable for you and tailor the treatment accordingly.
Please note: Colonic hydrotherapy is a complementary therapy that works alongside conventional medical care. It isn't intended to diagnose, treat or cure medical conditions. If you're experiencing ongoing or unexplained digestive symptoms, it's important to speak with your GP or healthcare professional.
Many clients find that combining medical advice with complementary therapies, healthy lifestyle choices and good nutrition provides a well-rounded approach to supporting their digestive health and overall wellbeing.
Feeling Nervous? That's Completely Normal.
If you're feeling a little anxious about your first appointment, you're certainly not alone.
Almost every first-time client has similar concerns, and that's why I believe understanding the treatment beforehand can make all the difference.
Let's answer the questions I hear most often.
Will It Be Embarrassing?
This is by far the biggest worry for most people.
The reality is that your privacy and dignity are protected throughout the treatment.
You'll be covered with a soft fleece blanket from your waist to below your knees, and only the small area required for treatment is uncovered.
The treatment uses a closed system, which means waste is carried away through tubing rather than being exposed. The system is designed to keep the treatment as clean, hygienic and discreet as possible.
Having supported many clients through their first colonic, I know it's completely normal to feel a little nervous. I always ensure that you feel relaxed, informed and supported throughout the appointment. By the end of the appointment, many clients tell me they forgot they were worried at all.
Will It Hurt?
A colonic should not be painful.
As water is introduced into the colon, you may notice a feeling of fullness or mild cramping similar to needing to open your bowels. These sensations are usually brief and pass quickly.
Many clients are pleasantly surprised by how relaxing the treatment feels once they settle in.
Is It Safe?
Your safety is always my priority.
Before every treatment, we'll go through a detailed health consultation to make sure colonic hydrotherapy is suitable for you.
The equipment used is specifically designed for colonic hydrotherapy and carefully controls the water temperature and pressure throughout the session.
All equipment that comes into contact with your body is sterile and single-use.
You'll never be left alone during your treatment, and I'll explain each stage as we go so you always know what to expect.
How to Prepare for Your Appointment
Preparing for your colonic is simple, and following a few steps beforehand can help make your treatment as comfortable as possible.
Stay Well Hydrated
Hydration is one of the most important ways to prepare.
When we're dehydrated, the colon naturally absorbs more water from waste, making stools firmer and more difficult to pass.
Aim to drink around 1.5 to 2 litres of water each day for the two to four days before your appointment.
Herbal teas and clear broths also count towards your fluid intake.
Try to limit alcohol, sugary fizzy drinks and excessive caffeine, as these can contribute to dehydration.
Avoid a Heavy Meal
It's perfectly fine to eat before your appointment, but try to avoid a large meal within two hours of your treatment.
Choosing lighter foods beforehand will usually help you feel more comfortable.
Complete Your Health Forms
Before your treatment, you'll complete a Client Consent Form covering:
Your medical history
Current medications
Supplements
Previous surgery
Allergies
Possible contraindications
Please also bring a list of any medications or supplements you're currently taking.
What Happens During Your Appointment?
Knowing what happens step by step often helps ease any nerves.
Your Consultation
Your appointment begins with a private consultation lasting around five to ten minutes.
We'll discuss:
Your bowel habits
Your digestive health
Your medical history
Your treatment goals
This is also your opportunity to ask any questions.
Privacy and Getting Ready
You'll be shown to the treatment room and asked to use the bathroom before removing your lower clothing and underwear.
You'll then wrap a large fleece blanket around your waist before returning to the treatment room.
The blanket remains in place throughout the treatment, helping you feel comfortable and covered.
The Treatment
Once you're comfortably positioned on the treatment couch, a small, sterile, single-use speculum is gently inserted.
You'll begin by lying on your side before turning comfortably onto your back.
Warm filtered water is introduced gradually into the colon while waste is safely carried away through the closed system.
Throughout the treatment, I gently massage your abdomen over the blanket to encourage the natural movement of the bowel.
Depending on your individual needs and treatment goals, I may recommend a herbal, coffee or wild yam enema as part of your treatment.
Herbal enemas are often chosen for their soothing properties and may be used to support the bowel during the session.
Coffee enemas are traditionally used in some complementary therapy practices and are believed to encourage the release of bile from the liver and gallbladder, which plays an important role in the digestion of fats.
Wild yam enemas may be considered where a client experiences abdominal cramping or discomfort, as wild yam has traditionally been used in herbal medicine to support relaxation of smooth muscle.
I will always explain why a particular option may be appropriate, and we can decide together which is right for you.
Enemas are optional, and your colonic hydrotherapy treatment can still be carried out without one.
The treatment itself usually lasts between 30 and 45 minutes, although every person is different. There is never any rush.
If at any point during the treatment you have a question, feel uncomfortable or simply want to pause, just let me know. Your comfort and wellbeing are always my priority.
Optional High-Strength Probiotic Implant
Some clients choose to finish their appointment with a High-Strength Probiotic Implant.
This optional treatment introduces beneficial bacteria directly into the lower bowel after your colonic, bypassing the stomach so the probiotics reach the colon directly.
If you're interested in supporting your gut microbiome after treatment, I'd be happy to explain whether this option is suitable for you.
What Does a Colonic Feel Like?
The sensation is different for everyone.
Most people describe:
A feeling of fullness
Mild pressure
Gentle cramping similar to needing the toilet
These sensations only last for short periods, and many clients find themselves relaxing as the treatment continues.
After Your Colonic
Once the treatment has finished, you'll have plenty of private time in the bathroom before getting dressed.
Before you leave, we'll go through your personalised aftercare advice together.
This may include recommendations about:
Staying hydrated
Eating nourishing foods
Supporting healthy bowel habits
Lifestyle changes to help your digestive health
Whether another treatment may be beneficial
Some people feel refreshed and energised after a colonic, while others prefer to take things a little easier for the rest of the day. Both responses are perfectly normal.
Listening to your body and continuing to drink plenty of water can help you feel your best after treatment.
If you have any questions after your treatment or anything doesn't feel as you expected, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Can everyone have colonic hydrotherapy?
No. Some medical conditions mean colonic hydrotherapy isn't suitable, which is why every appointment begins with a thorough health consultation.
How often should I have a colonic?
This depends on your individual health, lifestyle and goals. I'll discuss this with you during your consultation and make recommendations based on your needs.
Can I drive afterwards?
Yes. Most clients are able to drive home and continue with their normal day, although some prefer to take it easy if they feel a little tired.
Can I go back to work?
Yes. Most people return to work or their normal daily routine straight after their appointment.
